Give Up Yer Aul Sins
Speaking of Irish speech, it’s Sunday Short time and it’s all about the way we speak.
About twenty years ago, when I was temporarily in England, the Da, An t-Eolaí, made a tape from the radio at home in Ireland - for personal and non-commercial use - and sent it to me, for he knew it was a slice of Dublin I’d be missing.
In the 1960s in Dublin, a group of schoolchildren were taped telling stories of the bible to their teacher, Peig Cunningham. It was so popular on radio that it was eventually released commercially. And that audio release was so successful that an animation was eventually made, of one of the stories , that of John the Baptist - with such great lines as: Are you really God, or are you a shocking holy saint?
Made by Brown Bag Productions, in association with The Irish Film Board, RTE, and The Arts Council, here, courtesy of YouTube, is that animation, Give Up Yer Aul Sins:
See Other Irish Films;
• Guy’s Dog - Irish claymation by Rory Bresnihan
• Choppers - Irish pub story by Paul Farran
• A Taxing Night - Dublin taxi story by O’Neill, Bushe & Canning
My sister gave me the video of this for Christmas a few years ago. Hilarious stuff.
A true classic. I still return to that audio tape every so often.
