I’m just wondering how many kids in Kansas City have been killed in drive-by stabbings?

Yes, yes, yes. Seems your sensible comments got lost in the din over at Twenty’s yesterday.
A highway patrolman down here in the Bootheel of Missouri was the target of a “drive-by bow and arrow shooting” a few years ago.
Luckily they missed, but sheesh, only here in redneck-ville could that happen.
It appears that as a society, we’re quite ok with ones-ees. But when the number is larger, say for argument sake 30, then we take notice. Nevermind that the ones-ess add up to a larger number simply because they don’t all happen at once. So somehow we justify it as a flook and “that couldn’t happen again.” But it does - again, and again. We’re completely prepared to dismiss one life but not 30… and who said there is no price on life?
My first visit to Kansas (what, 9 years ago?) my contact said he’ have me picked up at the airport. The rental car would be delivered to the hotel. “We don’t want you getting shot”.
I assumed he was thinking I’d cause some road-rage incident driving on the right for the first time.
It turned out there was an on-going spate of shootings of drivers (not passengers) on the interstate around then. I never did find out if they caught the shooter. He must have been well trained though. Always hit the driver. Never the passengers. Maybe it was more fun to see a car crash than just pull over.
April,
There was a spell in Ireland when trains leaving Dublin heading west were the target of a crossbow. As a kid I was a regular passenger on those inter-city trains at the time and stones being thrown at the train happened almost to every train. Watching the stone throwers and hearing the crashes of the stones against the train was fascinating and scary, but I remember feeling especially scared that an arrow might come whizzling through the window.
Okay, so NOT only in redneck-ville. And I agree…stones somewhat scary, arrows terrifying.
And ya gotta wonder what motivates someone to shoot trains with a crossbow. I’ve never understood random violence. If I’m gonna get violent (and please note, I’m a total wimp who expresses anger via doorslamming and stalking off), it’s gonna be on someone who actually ticked me off.
