Celtic Woman in KC: Same Old Same New
As we get closer to the Celtic Woman show in Kansas City, there’s an article in the Kansas City Star on the current incarnation of females to carry the Celtic moniker.
Fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt says that the Celtic Woman show of new and old music isn’t just for an older crowd, and that their audience is usually very diverse:
“People from all walks of life attend our shows, and I think it’s because Americans appreciate history and beauty.”
Celtic Woman’s repertoire consists of traditional Irish melodies, light classical and modern favorites, infused with the singers’ trademark ethereal voices and a wee bit o’ spunky fun.
It’s an extensive tour of the US this PBS affair, and includes 2 dates in St Louis (@ the Fox Theatre, March 28, 29) before the Celtic women play Kansas City.
Alex Sharpe is the newest member of Celtic Woman, I think, and the Star says that she joins Lynn Hilary, Chloë Agnew, Órla Fallon and the previously mentioned Nesbitt. Last I heard Lynn had joined. And what happened to Hayley Westenra and Méav Ní Mhaolchatha? Lisa Kelly, I mentioned earlier, is off reproducing Celtic babies.
I must admit to feeling suspicious of a group which doesn’t highlight its members. Let me know if you’re certain exactly who is in Celtic Woman these days, based solely on their own large and commercial website.
Since I seem to be feeling a touch negative, why is this next paragraph necessary - specifically what’s in brackets:
While on stage, the women never stop moving. (In fact, for much of the show, some audience members may find themselves breathlessly anticipating a wardrobe malfunction from the performers’ cleavage-baring princess gowns.) The feisty Nesbitt, who makes fiddling look sexy, often steals the show.
Anyway, there’s plenty more in the article by Candice Reed so have a read, and if you have a stomach for some gentle cynicism you could always read what I wrote about Celtic Woman in KC last year
The Celtic Woman show starts at 7:30pm on Sunday, March 30 at the Sprint Center, but you knew that because I’ve had it on the Kansas City Irish Events Calendar for ages.
