Celtic Fringe President On The Radio
This Sunday, December 3 at 10:30am-11am on 1510 AM on Celtic Crossings, the Celtic Fringe’s president, Sarah Walsh will be on to talk about the organization.
The Celtic Fringe was formed back in 1994 and named by former president Brendan McGonagle (an Irish Earl who has long since flown from KC) in what he told me was a visionary attempt at something very deep and cultural.
The Fringe today represents a forum for people of Celtic heritage or interest to come together to rediscover or express their heritage
It seems to be that most people in North America refer to the “seven nations” of the Celtic world when really they should be referring to six. Those with a Celtic language surving to this day are the Irish, Scottish and Manx nations with one family of languages, and Welsh, Breton and Cornish with another.
Galicia is regularly referred to as one of the “seven nations” but in reality is no more deserving of the title ‘Celtic’ than central European countries or Portugal or France, or England as a whole for that matter.
Sarah will be talking about the Fringe, and her husband Barney will be talking about the greater Kansas City Irish community. The Walsh’s are two of the hardest working people in and for the community, and very humourous with it.
Incidentally given that that Celts started in central Europe - which includes modern day southern Germany - it’s as appropriate for Celtic vendors to appear at Oktoberfests in North America as it is for them to appear at Irish Festivals. Think of us as all in the one big swords and sandals family. And have a read up of the La Tène style of Celtic history to learn some more.
The Celtic Fringe meets on the First Tuesday of each month in Charlie Hoopers in Brookside at 7:30pm - inside.
