Cathie Ryan in Kansas City
Update: See review of Cathy Ryan gig
The MVFS is presenting Cathie Ryan and her band, on Thursday, November 9 at 7:30 pm, at All Souls Unitarian Church, Bragg Auditorium.
When Eleanor McEvoy recorded A Woman’s Heart it somehow lended an opportunity to define the top Irish singers of the day - as well as having those of us with a man’s heart say things like, hey our hearts can be low too, you know.
By the time the A Woman’s Heart - A Decade On album was recorded, singers from further afield were involved. Joining the likes of Irish singers Dolores Keane, Maura O’Connell. Mary Black, Mary Coughlan, Sinead O’Connor, Frances Black, and Sinead Lohan, was Irish American Cathie Ryan. And for some reason Alison Krauss, and Dolly Parton. Perhaps because they are women, and their hearts were low.
That sort of company is some serious pedigree, and Cathie Ryan is worth her place among such quality. Cathie’s own recent album, The Farthest Wave is critically acclaimed from the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal to The Irish Times and Rolling Stone, and showcases the songwriting strengths of the former singer from Cherish The Ladies. Indeed both Frances Black and Mary Black have recorded songs by Ryan.
If you are a convert to the songs of John Spillane after his recent Kansas City appearance - and you should be - you’ll be pleased to know that Cathie includes a Spillane song among her numbers. Born of parents from Tipperary and Kerry, Cathie is as Irish as you, me, and the Cayman Islands.
Being a Folk organization, the Missouri Valley Folklife Society presents much more than Irish music to the Kansas City region, but whoever it brings in is only quality. Should you ever be unfamiliar with an act, just know that when you see the letters MVFS attached to a performance, deliberations aren’t necessary - just go.
