Byrne Custom Woodworking and KC’s New Irish Pub Raglan Road
Despite all the hoopla about the opening of McFadden’s Sports Saloon in KC it’s fair to say that the opening early in 2008 of Raglan Road is of greater interest to the Irish community in Kansas City.
The original Raglan Road at downtown Disney Pleasure Ireland in Florida has so many pub fronts it surely has one for you. Truth be told it also has my favourite Irish pub front in North America - this one here in the red-brick.
Now we already know that KC’s Raglan Road’s antique bar, flooring, furniture and other features, in a quest for authenticity that other Irish pubs skip, are being shipped from Ireland. But did you know that Irishman Ian Byrne’s company Byrne Custom Woodworking is doing a lot of the work on Raglan Road including all the exterior joinery?
Ian Byrne, who many people in Kansas City (and indeed all over the US) know as the lead-singer of Celtic rock band The Elders, emigrated from County Wicklow all the way back in 1987. Ian brought with him a woodworking craftsmanship he learned in an extensive apprenticeship in Ireland and he then taught his craftsmen at Byrne Custom Woodworking those techniques such as hand-carving, steam bending and intricate veneer inlays.
With a reputation for exquisite quality about 50% of Byrne’s business being high-end custom residential woodwork, it means you can get that unique piece of furniture made just as surely as the commercial clients, such as Harrah’s Casino, the Catholic Archdiocese of Kansas, or Raglan Road.
