Brand New Song by Eddie Delahunt
So I decided to cycle in the rain to O’Dowd’s last night. And very glad about it I was.
And not because riding on the Trolley Track Trail was like cycling in wet cement.
Or because the super-smooth and flawless surface of Brookside Boulevard was dug up - presumably to be replaced with a brand new super-smooth and flawless surface.
No, the dirt-slushing of the trail and jiggedy-jiggle of Brookside were mere bonuses to hearing a brand new song by Eddie Delahunt. That’s A brand new song, not the “Brand New Song” which features on the rather good Original Sing CD and was also played by Eddie & Friends last night.
The new song is not quite finished, but we got most of it. I’ll confess that I had no idea it was coming as I was talking (with somebody very interesting I’ll tell you about another time) and had my back to the stage.
But as I was talking I thought, hang on a minute, what is that? And I wheeled around. Which is not so easy on a chair with no wheels.
The accordion was busy is how I’d put it to describe the tune, so youre’ not talking a slow ballad. And I suppose I should give credit to Brett Gibson as the accordion didn’t play itself. And Gabriel Reyes on the bodhrán was no slouch either. At least not in this regard.
The new song is an upbeat happy tune, and one Eddie and you the listeners of the live shows - especially those of you from Ireland - will get a real kick out of, such are the lyrics. I won’t tell you what they are, because frankly you don’t deserve to hear them.
So you can just go and cycle 12 miles in the rain yourself. Or I suppose you could use motorized transport - I recommend it for the scraped Brookside Boulevard.
You’ll be hearing lots of this new song over the summer, and I dare say you’ll hear it this coming Friday at the Westsider and again on Sunday back at O’Dowd’s.
But then you’ll have to wait for a bit - for Eddie is leaving Kansas City for a spell, and heading home to Ireland for a week’s break while the rest of us gorge on food in celebration of independence from Britain. Changes will be made to the Events Calendar.
This brand new song is called Banner Man
