Book: Cycling Across America (by me)
[Update: After a couple of major hold-ups, the journal of the entire trip is now published. Currently, and I’m useless at deadlines, the plan is for the book to be ready in late 2010]
By popular demand the journal to my bicycle trip across America back in 1996, that I posted excerpts from the first half of - will form the basis of a book on the trip
And that book will be available to purchase from here on Irish KC.
A few things have to happen first, like the transciption of the remaining untranscibed tape.
Then some serious editing, some extra writing, and some artwork. And then it should be ready to go. When? It’ll take a few months.
Plenty of hindsight will be employed, to hide just how stupid and ignorant I was at times, and to make sense of whatever it was I was doing.
Meanwhile I’ll continue to publish excerpts here on Irish KC, and dare I say it but I believe the unposted second half is much better written than what’s been seen so far - though from the first half, the day I was killed has always been popular.
Please note I am NOT talking about a book deal - this is just using the available technology to give certain people what they are asking for. Printing on demand it’ll cost whatever books tend to cost.
Prior to the cycle trip I had only been to the US once, the year previously for a brief visit to KC, so the cycle trip is very much my introduction to so much of America.
At the time there was a Presidential election campaign and following that was interesting. I’m not going to tell you how many states I traveled through though, or other statistics because:
1) Suspense
2) I may run a competition on it some day - to facilitate giving away a great prize. Yes, great.
Hopefully it won’t be too much longer before I get the excerpts going again. I’m so near to Kansas City, and so much has happened, I’m so excited.
If you’re new to this you can start reading excerpts from the beginning of the cycle - or browse the full cycle trip index and read out of order you whacky thing.
Here as a teaser then is a photo from the first half of the trip - specifically from this day, in North Carolina (I think):

And, avert your eyes - SPOILER ALERT - here’s a photo from the second half, the as of yet unpublished half, taken from the bicycle looking back at where I had just cycled from. Can you guess which state?

I will buy it.
