Millish in Kansas City in 2008

Thanks to The Elders, Kansas City gets to see Millish play in Kansas City, Missouri in 2008.

Millish are down as special guests of The Elders at the KC Celtic Rock boys’ 6th Annual Hoolie which takes place on Saturday March 15th, 2008.

Millish quote Frank Zappa in attempt to render pointless any words we might use to describe their music: Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.

However, dancing about architecture sounds eminently worthwhile to me, and wasn’t that exactly what Riverdance was about anyway?

Some people call Millish a trad band. I can’t. There’s way too much jazz in there for me to call it trad. In fact to call it trad there shouldn’t be any jazz. Don’t misunderstand; I’ve nothing whatsover against any kind of fusion, and left alone with a tape recorder will fuse away myself. I’m simply saying it’s not trad.

But it is very good. Jigs. Uilleann pipes. Fusion. Bluegrass. Irish. Fiddle. Jazz. And the obstetrical toad is gigging in his fertilized skirt. Honestly.

Here they are at the Irish Fest in Milwaukee last year performing a Tyler Duncan tune inspired, supposedly, by listening to Lúnasa backwards - which is why it’s called Asanul:

Anyway, how can you not like a band, that not alone likes poetry but champions it?

When I watch them play live I like to go to the front and look back at the watching audience.

Millish these days I believe are Tyler Duncan, Andrew Kratzat, Jesse Mason, Brad Phillips, Mike Shimmin, and Doug Stuart, and you can listen to examples of what they do on their MySpace page

Their debut album earned them an International Acoustic Music Award - before it was even released. Now that’s what I call really acoustic.

We’ll talk more about The Elders‘ annual Hoolie as we get nearer to St Patrick’s Day 2008.

Millish are great. I saw them at Milwaukee Irish Fest thanks to the recommendation of Joe Miquelon of the Elders, and I quite enjoyed them. I’m looking forward to seeing them at the Elders Hoolie.

I do agree they aren’t trad. I think to some folks, if it’s Celtic, and it’s accoustic, it’s trad. Though in reality, playing accoustically doesn’t mean a band can’t blend genres, as Millish do.

They’re very talented, and great fun. I know Joe is a great champion for them - if you follow that video to YouTube you’ll see a comment from him on it.

And I think you’re right on the trad acoustic thing, Ellen.
